The Palestinian government expressed its gratitude to Namibia for its “unwavering support” of the people, by revoking the permission to dock in Namibian waters from the MK Kathrin.

Namibia has banned the Portuguese-flagged freighter MV Kathrin from its territorial waters on suspicion that it is carrying military equipment and «explosive material» destined for Israel. This measure is in line with the African country’s international obligations and its position on the conflict in Gaza.

Namibia’s Justice Minister, Yvonne Dausab, confirmed the decision to local newspaper New Era: ‘Yes, I have asked Namport, through the line ministry, to consider the request not to allow the ship MV Kathrin to dock in our ports. The request was made on Friday».

Dausab explained that after receiving reports that a ship might be transporting weapons destined for Israel, I sent a letter to the Cabinet, the Ministry of International Relations, the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Security, warning them and reminding them of our international obligations, not only under the Genocide Convention but also under the recent advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)».

Citing a police investigation, the minister confirmed that MV Kathrin «was indeed transporting explosive material destined for Israel». Dausab stated: «Namibia fulfils its obligation not to support or be complicit in the Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, as well as their illegal occupation of Palestine».

The MV Kathrin, owned by the German company Concord Shipping, had requested permission to dock at Walvis Bay before continuing north, probably into the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Palestinian government expressed its gratitude to Namibia for its “unwavering support” of the people, by revoking the permission to dock in Namibian waters from the MK Kathrin.

Earlier this year, former Namibian president Hage Geingob strongly criticized Germany’s «scandalous decision» to support Israel in the genocide case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) brought by South Africa.

Namibia’s decision to block the ship with explosive material for Israel marks a significant precedent in the implementation of the Genocide Convention and reflects the growing international rejection of Israel over the situation in Gaza.
